Contactless spending has increased by 90% in the hospitality industry over the past year according to new figures from the Barclaycard Contactless Spending Index.
Contactless purchasing in pubs rose 79% and restaurants saw a 62% increase and overall, contactless spending is up 166% in 2016, which represents another recording breaking year for the payment technology.
Whilst London still leads the way in terms of contactless usage, spending in Manchester is rising faster than any other city (with a 32% increase) with Glasgow, Blackpool, Hull and Edinburgh also seeing massive jumps.
Half of all Brits are now estimated to use contactless at least once a month and one in five (21%) are planning to increase their usage even further, according to the findings.
Gordon Bolton, Managing Director of Bleep UK PLC, said: “We pioneered the launch of contactless payments in the UK at the London 2012 Olympic Games because we believed in this technology. We believed it could benefit retail and hospitality businesses alike, as well as improving convenience for customers”.
“We have spoke previously about the impressive increases for the retail industry but seeing the increases in pubs and restaurants proves this technology is now being adopted where ever possible. Accepting this payment method is now becoming essential and something all businesses need to consider. It is interesting to see that the majority of the increases in spending are coming in the North of the country, with Manchester and Blackpool seeing huge jumps – both on the doorstep of our Leyland offices”.
